The #1 Foundational Habit Every Worship Leader Must Not Avoid

I wanted to encourage you with something that I’ve been reading in the scriptures and has inspired this post.

Mental health is a hot topic these days. Many people are devoting themselves to researching how the mind works. Upbringing, social, economical, home life, and schooling are just some of the factors that play into mental health. Honestly, I’m no expert, nor have I done much research on the subject, however, I do want to insert a thought about it.

God says that life comes from the heart. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.” Other translations tell us to "guard your heart.” And, it says “with ALL diligence” not SOME diligence, or OCCASIONAL diligence, but WITH ALL DILIGENCE.

What does it mean to “guard your heart?” A soldier will guard a door or an entrance. He allows the people with clearance to enter and keeps out those who are not allowed. If someone comes through that doesn’t belong it could be detrimental to all those inside. Guarding our heart is very similar and EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. God said for us to do it “with all diligence.”

We guard our hearts by thinking about what we’re thinking about. God’s Word is our blueprint, our light, our guide. If the thoughts we think do not line up with God’s Word, we are to push those thoughts aside and replace them with life-giving, God honoring, and Biblical thoughts.

Here are a few scriptures to encourage you in this:

2 Corinthians 10:5 NLT
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ.

Philippians 4:8 AMP
Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart].

Psalm 19:14
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Make a daily habit of spending time with God by filling your heart and mind with His Word. Watch how God uses His Word to encourage, love, and guide you each day. One of the easiest ways to start is by reading one chapter of the book of Proverbs each day. There are 31 chapters, one for each day of the month. I personally love this book because the whole intention is to give wisdom to the reader, and we all need a little more wisdom. It only takes 5-7 minutes to read. Or you can have the YouVersion Bible App narrate it for you. Simple, right?

Building a better worship team begins with God’s Word. It is the foundation for every worship leader and team member. Make it a habit to read each day. And let’s learn to guard our hearts with all diligence and think about what you’re thinking about.
